A devastating car attack on a crowded Christmas market in Magdeburg, Germany, has claimed at least five lives, including a 9-year-old child. Over 200 people were injured, with more than 40 in critical condition.
The suspect, identified as a 50-year-old former doctor from Saudi Arabia, is believed to have renounced his faith and become increasingly anti-Islam. Authorities are still investigating his motive, but it’s thought he may have been upset about Germany’s handling of Saudi refugee cases.
Despite warnings from Saudi authorities, the suspect was not extradited due to concerns for his safety in Germany. The community is left reeling, with many residents laying flowers and candles near the market as tensions rise over security. Chancellor Olaf Scholz visited the site, urging Germans to “stick together as a country and not let hatred divide us.”
