Germany Delivers First RCH 155 Artillery System to Ukraine

Germany has delivered its first Remote-Controlled Howitzer 155 (RCH 155) artillery system to Ukraine, marking a significant milestone in the country’s efforts to modernize its military. The system, designed and manufactured by KNDS, is expected to provide Ukraine with much-needed artillery capabilities.

Ukraine will initially keep six of the 54 planned RCH 155 systems in Germany for training purposes, while the remaining units are scheduled to be delivered this year. The system’s automated turret allows for fully remote operation, eliminating the need for a crew inside it.

The RCH 155 features advanced fire control and navigation systems, enabling it to engage targets with high accuracy and speed. It can also fire on the move, thanks to its sophisticated stabilization system. Additionally, the system has the capability to engage other vehicles, making it suitable for ‘hunter-killer’ missions.

Ukraine will receive a total of 54 RCH 155s, enough to equip three artillery battalions. The German Ministry of Defense has allocated significant funding for the delivery of these systems, as well as other military aid to Ukraine.

Germany’s continued support for Ukraine is expected to be crucial in the coming months, particularly after the upcoming snap election in Germany. Opposing parties have expressed concerns about further deliveries of German weapons to Ukraine, which may impact the level of military assistance provided by the German government.

The delivery of the RCH 155 system marks an important step forward for Ukraine’s efforts to modernize its military and counter Russian aggression. As the system undergoes operational testing, it will provide valuable insights into its capabilities and potential shortcomings.
