Germany Lifts Range Restrictions on Weapons for Ukraine

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced on Monday that Germany, along with France, the UK and the US, has lifted restrictions on the range of weapons being sent to Ukraine. This means Ukraine can now defend itself against military positions in Russia.

Merz stated, “There are no longer any range restrictions on weapons delivered to Ukraine — neither by the British nor by the French nor by us nor by the Americans.” He reiterated that Germany would continue supporting Ukraine, saying, “We will do everything in our power to support Ukraine.”

The decision comes after Western countries supplied Ukraine with long-range Storm Shadow/Scalp cruise missiles and authorized its use of the Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) against targets in Russia. However, Germany had previously refrained from sending long-range Taurus missiles due to concerns about escalating tensions.

Russia’s Kremlin has responded to the decision, calling it “dangerous” and saying it contradicts their aspirations for a peaceful settlement. The country has criticized Western countries for supplying Ukraine with such weapons and warned against providing Kyiv with the Taurus missile system.
