Germany Prepares for Early Election on February 23

Germany’s President Frank-Walter Steinmeier has dissolved the country’s lower house of parliament, the Bundestag, setting the stage for a general election on February 23. The move comes after Chancellor Olaf Scholz lost a vote of confidence in December.

Scholz faces tough opposition from the conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU), which leads in recent polls by around 10 points. The Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, led by Alice Weidel, has also gained popularity and nominated Weidel as its candidate for chancellor.

Steinmeier warned that the next election campaign should focus on issues like immigration, economic growth, and supporting Ukraine in its conflict with Russia. He emphasized the importance of maintaining democratic values during the campaign.

The polls suggest a tough bid for Scholz’s reelection, but Steinmeier’s message aims to reassure voters that political stability is essential for Germany’s future.
