Germany’s finance ministry has denied plans to meet with its Italian counterpart over UniCredit’s push for a merger with Commerzbank. Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil will travel to Rome this weekend, but no meeting is currently planned.
A recent report suggested that Klingbeil could meet Italian Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti to discuss their positions on the matter. However, German opposition has stalled UniCredit’s takeover ambitions for Commerzbank.
UniCredit CEO Andrea Orcel plans to wait until 2026 or 2027 to decide what to do with its 28% stake in Commerzbank. The Italian bank has sent a letter of congratulations to Berlin’s new government.
No meeting between the two ministers is currently planned, despite UniCredit’s efforts to discuss the matter further.
