Germany has rejected Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer’s call for Europe to deploy troops to Ukraine as part of a peace deal. Chancellor Olaf Scholz described the suggestion as “completely premature” and “highly inappropriate”. The proposal, which included putting British servicemen at risk, came after an article in The Telegraph declaring Britain would play a leading role in post-war security guarantees for Ukraine.
The move comes as European leaders scramble to show unity in support of Kyiv following US President Donald Trump’s surprise announcement of peace talks with Russian leader Vladimir Putin. A meeting between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russia’s Sergey Lavrov is set for Tuesday in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
