Germany Takes Tougher Stance on Israel Amid Gaza Conflict

Germany’s tone towards Israel has become increasingly harsh, with new Chancellor Friedrich Merz expressing concern over the Israeli army’s actions in the Gaza Strip. Merz stated that a line had been crossed and international humanitarian law had been breached, and that causing suffering to civilians “can no longer be justified” as a fight against Hamas terrorism.

This shift in tone is part of a growing criticism from Germany towards Israel’s handling of the conflict. French President Emmanuel Macron has also spoken out, calling Israel’s actions “shameful.” France, the UK, and Canada have announced their preparedness to impose sanctions on Israel if necessary.

Germany is considering suspending arms exports to Israel due to concerns over human rights abuses. The country’s anti-Semitism commissioner, Felix Klein, has criticized Netanyahu’s government for its policies, stating that starving Palestinians and making the humanitarian situation worse is not related to safeguarding Israel’s right to exist.

The German government is opposed to changing its association agreement with Israel, but some officials are calling for a re-evaluation of ties. However, most politicians agree that Germany should use its relationships with Israel to influence the government’s actions and bring humanitarian aid back to Gaza.
