Germany Unveils Record-Breaking Defense Spending Bill

Germany’s lower legislative house, the Bundestag, has approved a massive defense spending bill that could make it one of Europe’s top military powers. The bill, which was passed with a comfortable majority, designates future German defense and security spending as not subject to strict deficit spending limits.

The legislation aims to increase Germany’s military capabilities and provide significant assistance to Ukraine, with estimates suggesting total Russian 2024 military expenditures could reach $461 billion. However, German taxpayers spent just $67.4 billion on defense in 2024, highlighting the need for a more substantial commitment from Berlin.

Under the bill, Germany plans to allocate at least an additional $470 billion for defense and associated needs over the next decade, with funding potentially reaching €600 billion ($654 billion) over the next ten years. This would roughly double annual German defense spending.

Supporters of the bill argue that Russia poses a significant threat to Europe and that increased military spending is necessary to counter this risk. Key riders in the legislation include provisions for civil protection, intelligence services, and support for states attacked in violation of international law.

The bill was strongly supported by major parties from the left, center, and center-right, with even opposition from right-wing factions being largely overcome. Top officials from both the outgoing ruling coalition and incoming government have spoken out in favor of the bill, emphasizing the need to counter Russian aggression.

Critics argue that the vote is a response to recent US withdrawal from European defense commitments and reflects a new era for Germany’s national security strategy. However, proponents see it as a necessary measure to address ongoing tensions with Russia and protect European interests.
