Gerrit Cole to Miss Entire 2025 Season with Tommy John Surgery

New York Yankees ace Gerrit Cole will undergo Tommy John surgery to repair a torn right ulnar collateral ligament and miss the entire 2025 season, according to ESPN. The 34-year-old pitcher was recommended for the surgery by medical experts due to his injured elbow.

Cole’s injury has been a recurring issue this year, with him dealing with nerve irritation in his elbow earlier in 2024. Despite being effective when healthy, he recorded only 17 starts last season due to these injuries. His latest outing against the Minnesota Twins was particularly concerning, allowing five hits and six earned runs in just 2.2 innings.

The Yankees’ rotation is already dealing with health issues, with right-hander Luis Gil expected to miss at least three months with a lat strain injury. Additionally, veteran slugger Giancarlo Stanton will begin the season on the injured list due to elbow problems.

With Cole out of commission, Max Fried is now set to headline New York’s 2025 rotation.
