Gervonta Davis successfully retained his WBA lightweight title by defeating Lamont Roach Jr. in a majority draw on Saturday at the Barclays Center in New York. The 30-year-old boxer, nicknamed Tank, took to the canvas in the ninth round after running hair product into his eyes, which caused him discomfort.
The controversy surrounding the incident led many to believe that Roach was the rightful winner of the fight. Two judges scored the contest 115-113 in Davis’ favor, while the other two judges scored it 114-114, resulting in a majority draw. However, since Roach volunteered to take the knee during the ninth round, according to the rules, he would have automatically won the bout.
Roach expressed his frustration with the decision, stating that “The Reaper” was robbed of victory. Boxing journalist Dan Rafael also condemned the decision, calling it an “utter disgrace.” Meanwhile, Davis claimed that he “landed the most punches in the fight” and deserved to win, attributing his actions to hair product burning his eyes.
Despite losing the majority draw, Roach remains confident and announced a potential rematch in the future. The 25-year-old boxer believes he did enough to secure victory against a skilled opponent like Davis.
