Windows 10 support ends on October 14, but Microsoft offers an extra year of security updates through its Extended Security Update (ESU) program. Here’s how to sign up for ESU for free in the US:
First, ensure your PC is up-to-date by checking Settings > System > About. Install all available Windows 10 updates.
Next, log in with an administrator account, especially if you share a computer with multiple users.
Verify that your PC is eligible for a free upgrade to Windows 11 or not. If it’s eligible, upgrade; otherwise, proceed with enrolling in ESU.
To enroll in ESU:
1. Go to Settings > Update & Security.
2. Click “Enroll Now” and select the “Add this device to receive Extended Security Updates.”
3. Follow the prompts, and you’re done!
Note: European users can also sign up for ESU for free without any conditions.
By enrolling in ESU, you’ll get another year of security updates for Windows 10, giving you more time to figure out an alternative upgrade path to Windows 11. If anything changes next year, we’ll update this story with the latest information.
