As the holiday season approaches, it’s essential to prioritize your health and that of your loved ones. Now is the perfect time to get vaccinated against severe COVID-19 and influenza, as well as whooping cough, which is spreading rapidly in Minnesota.
According to the Minnesota Department of Health, there have been over 2,300 cases of whooping cough reported, with most in the Twin Cities metro area. This infectious disease can be particularly severe in infants, who may require hospitalization if infected.
Ensuring that you and everyone around young children is up to date on pertussis boosters is crucial for their protection. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that 70-85% of seasonal flu-related deaths occur among people 65 years and older, making it essential for older adults to get vaccinated.
The CDC recommends annual flu shots for everyone 6 months and older, as well as updated COVID booster shots. In Minnesota, 42% of seniors have gotten the latest COVID shot, and 54% have received this year’s flu shot.
However, some groups are at higher risk for severe COVID complications, including those over 65, with diabetes, obesity, or chronic heart, lung, kidney, and liver conditions. Cost is not an excuse to avoid vaccination; Medicare and commercial insurance typically cover the cost of vaccines.
Fortunately, there’s still time to get vaccinated before Christmas. The Minnesota Department of Health recommends using a free online tool called Docket to check your immunization record and see what vaccines are due. It’s never too late to get vaccinated – “now is the perfect time to do so,” according to vaccine management and improvement unit supervisor Jessica Munroe.
