Getty Images Sues AI Firm Stability Over Copyright Infringement

A UK court trial has begun between Getty Images and Stability AI, a company that uses images from Getty’s library to train its AI model. The case could set a precedent for the use of copyrighted works in AI development.

Getty claims that Stability scraped its photos without permission to train Stable Diffusion, an image generator. Stability counters that its tool is fair use and does not violate any rights.

The trial comes as the UK government struggles to pass a bill allowing AI companies to use copyrighted works without payment or permission. The Data (Use and Access) Bill has faced opposition from creative industries fearful of losing control over their work.

A lawyer said that this case will be “pivotal in setting the boundaries of the monopoly granted by UK copyright in the age of AI.” Another expert noted that the High Court’s ruling could have a major impact on market practice and the UK’s attractiveness as a jurisdiction for AI development.

The trial is expected to last several weeks, and Getty has also filed a parallel lawsuit against Stability in the US.
