New York Yankees slugger Giancarlo Stanton is set to start the 2025 MLB season on the injured list due to ongoing elbow issues. Stanton, who recently received a second round of platelet-rich plasma injections, will likely miss baseball activities and begin his recovery in Tampa this weekend. The 16-year veteran’s elbow tendinitis, which has plagued him since last season, is being managed with PRP injections and will not require immediate surgery.
The Yankees’ general manager, Brian Cashman, views surgery as a “last resort” option for Stanton, citing the need to explore other treatment options before considering surgery. The 35-year-old star’s injury could lead to more playing time for outfielder Aaron Judge at DH, while other options such as Ben Rice and Everson Pereira are being considered.
Stanton batted .233 with a .773 OPS last season, including seven home runs in the postseason, where he was named ALCS MVP. The Yankees open their 2025 season on March 27 against the Milwaukee Brewers, with Stanton’s recovery expected to be ongoing throughout the year.
