Giant Asteroid to Pass Close to Earth in Rare Event

A massive asteroid, 2020 XR, is hurtling towards Earth at a speed of 27,500 miles per hour and will make its closest approach on December 4. At approximately 1.37 million miles away, it’s about the size of a football stadium – roughly 1,200 feet in diameter.

This near-Earth object (NEO) is designated as “potentially hazardous,” but NASA assures that it won’t pose a threat to our planet. The asteroid will be visible via livestream starting at 1:30 p.m. ET on Tuesday, December 3, through the Virtual Telescope Project and European Space Agency.

Asteroid 2020 XR will bypass Earth again in about four years but not until at least 2196 when it’s expected to pass by at an estimated 11.3 million miles away.
