Representatives from Eston Ward in North Yorkshire, England, have raised concerns about a growing rat infestation in their neighborhood. The rats, some of which are as large as small cats, have been spotted in alleyways, around bins, on overgrown land, and even inside homes.
Local councillors David Taylor and Stephen Martin shared images of the giant rat, which they nicknamed “Normanby rat.” They called for the council to take action and fund pest control measures. The pair also urged businesses, landlords, and affordable housing providers to collaborate in tackling the problem.
The issue has led to a meeting with the council’s vermin control officer, who said social housing providers will reintroduce pest control across their homes and land. The councillors have expressed frustration that the government has failed to address litter problems, cut grass, and fund street maintenance, contributing to the rat infestation.
