A massive male great white shark, named Contender, has been tracked by researchers from OCEARCH off the East Coast of the United States. Measuring 4.2 meters in length and weighing around 750 kg, Contender is the largest male great white shark ever recorded in the Northwestern Atlantic region.
The shark’s journey began in January 2025 when it was tagged near Jacksonville, Florida. Since then, it has traveled over 3,000 kilometers across the ocean, providing valuable insights into its migration and feeding patterns. Researchers are now closely monitoring Contender’s movements to better understand the migratory behaviors of adult great white sharks.
However, Contender’s recent movements have raised concerns among local authorities and experts. In early June 2025, the shark was detected off the coast of North Carolina, much closer to shore than previously recorded. Although it has not shown aggressive behavior, its proximity to populated areas has led to a cautionary statement from experts.
Researchers are using satellite technology to track Contender’s path, emitting signals whenever it surfaces. While this method is invaluable, it is also limited by the sporadic nature of the signals. The data gathered so far will help scientists understand the long-distance movements of great white sharks during the summer feeding season and shed light on their feeding hotspots.
By tracking Contender’s movements, researchers aim to gain a clearer picture of the feeding patterns and migration routes of great white sharks. This research is crucial in gaining a better understanding of these elusive predators and will help inform conservation efforts.
