Giant Magellan Telescope to Unlock Cosmos Secrets

The Giant Magellan Telescope (GMT) is one of three next-generation telescopes being built. These Extremely Large Telescopes will greatly improve our understanding of astronomy, from studying exoplanets to the first stars and galaxies that formed in the universe. Dr. Rebecca Bernstein, Staff Scientist at Carnegie Science, explains how the GMT is designed to achieve this.

The GMT is currently under construction at the Carnegie’s Las Campanas Observatory in Chile. When completed, it will enable groundbreaking astronomy discoveries, including revealing fundamental physics of the cosmos and advancing life search on distant worlds.

As Chief Scientist for the Giant Magellan Telescope Organization, Dr. Bernstein oversees the project. She has extensive experience as an optical designer and builder of scientific instruments, with previous roles at the Hubble Space Telescope and Research Fellow at Carnegie Science.
