New York Giants general manager Joe Schoen made it clear that he’s considering non-quarterbacks with the top pick in the upcoming NFL Draft, leaving many to speculate about his intentions for the highly anticipated selection. In a Monday press conference at the NFL’s annual league meetings, Schoen emphasized the importance of “putting them” in a player and making sure they fit specific criteria, suggesting that he may pass on taking a quarterback with the third pick.
Schoen rationalized his approach by pointing out that finding a franchise quarterback is not an easy task. He highlighted the Giants’ need for long-term answers at the most important position, having struggled to find stability behind Daniel Jones since drafting him sixth overall in 2019. Despite some notable exceptions, taking a quarterback later in the draft hasn’t proven to be a reliable path.
Instead, Schoen is focusing on veteran quarterbacks Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston, who will share first-team reps during the offseason program. The Giants made a one-year contract offer to Wilson, worth $10.5 million with an additional $10.5 million available in incentives. They also signed Winston to a two-year deal reportedly worth $8 million.
Schoen stressed that he didn’t make any assurances to Wilson about the team’s plans for the third pick, choosing instead to emphasize the importance of being open to “everything.” The GM acknowledged that the quarterback position is always a high priority but emphasized the need to prioritize finding the best player available who can help the Giants win games in 2025.
