Girl Scouts Adapt to King Soopers Strike with Creative Sales Strategies

The labor strike by King Soopers union employees on the Front Range has taken a toll on local Girl Scout cookie sales. However, troops like Troop 3010 in Boulder are adapting to the situation by selling cookies outside non-unionized stores and exploring new sales venues.

In Longmont, where all three King Soopers stores are non-unionized, Girl Scouts were able to sell cookies outside of the stores on Saturday. Meanwhile, in Boulder, troops like Troop 3010 have set up booths at Silver Vines Winery near the Pearl Street Mall, selling classic varieties to mall pedestrians.

To help their troop’s sales, the winery printed wine pairing guides featuring cookie pairings, including a Sauvignon Blanc and Lemon-Ups. The partnership demonstrates the collaborative spirit between the Girl Scouts and the community during this time of uncertainty.

Other troops, like Troop 75990 in Lafayette, are also finding creative solutions to sell cookies despite the strike. They sold over 100 boxes outside the Boulder REI on Saturday, with customers praising their efforts even if they didn’t purchase a box.

King Soopers officials have extended the period for Girl Scouts to sell cookies outside stores through March 16 and made a $15,000 donation to support the organization’s programs. The company acknowledges the importance of cookie sales in supporting leadership development and community engagement.

As the selling season continues, troops will be monitoring new vendor locations to make up for lost sales at King Soopers. Despite the challenges, many are finding innovative ways to adapt and continue their efforts to support the Girl Scouts’ mission.
