The long-awaited sequel to Ridley Scott’s 2000 epic “Gladiator” finally arrived in theaters, but unfortunately, it fails to live up to expectations. The story takes place 16 years after the events of the first film and follows Lucius (Paul Mescal), a buffed-up warrior who may or may not be the son of Maximus (Russell Crowe). However, unlike his predecessor, Mescal lacks charm and charisma.
The plot revolves around twin emperors Caracalla (Fred Hechinger) and Geta (Joseph Quinn), both driven by power-mad ambitions. The action unfolds with Lucius fighting against Roman forces in Numidia, but the chaotic battle feels dull. Denzel Washington shines as Macrinus, a peddler of gladiators who becomes key to Lucius’s rise.
Washington steals every scene he’s in, delivering Oscar-worthy performances, and it’s clear he’s the only one on screen with any real presence. The script by David Scarpa is weak, with poorly written emperors and underwhelming war battle sequences. Even the gladiator matches, where ridiculous scenarios like giant CGI baboons and water battles take center stage, fail to entertain.
Despite Denzel Washington’s efforts, “Gladiator II” feels like a mishmash of other films – “Jaws,” “The Omen,” and “Training Day” all come together in this mess. While Washington shines, the rest of the cast fails to deliver, making it hard to enjoy this lackluster sequel.
