Global Coalition Announces Stance on Holding Israel Accountable

A group of 12 countries, representing the “Global South,” has committed to taking action against Israeli abuses in Gaza by preventing arms transfers and other measures. The Hague Group, which organized a two-day meeting in Bogota, Colombia, announced six steps aimed at restraining Israel’s assault on the Occupied Palestinian Territories. The measures include denying arms to Israel, banning ships transporting such arms, and reviewing public contracts for possible links to companies benefiting from the Israeli occupation.

The coalition, comprising countries like Bolivia, Indonesia, Namibia, and South Africa, aims to bring collective state action against Israel’s war on Gaza and the occupation of Palestinian territories. They believe that “impunity is over” and that it’s time for governments of conscience to take action.

Critics question whether smaller economies can effectively dissuade Israel from its military campaign, given its multibillion-dollar support from the US. Despite this, officials attending the summit hailed the measures as part of a larger effort to chip away at Israeli impunity.

The meeting also saw the endorsement of universal jurisdiction mandates, which would allow states or international bodies to prosecute serious international crimes regardless of their location. The Hague Group expressed optimism that more countries could join in, with a deadline set for September 20 for others to participate.

Developing nations like South Africa and Colombia have been at the forefront of accountability efforts, with some even taking legal action against Israel. Colombian President Gustavo Petro stated that the Bogota summit marked “making history” and called on world leaders to enforce international law in Gaza.
