Global electric vehicle (EV) registrations are on track to reach a record 10.8 million by the end of the year, according to New AutoMotive’s latest tracker. This represents a 7% increase from last year and a total of 700,000 more EVs sold worldwide in 2024.
Plug-in hybrids also saw significant growth, reaching 4.8 million units sold, up 54% from 2023. In contrast, internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicle registrations are set to decline for the fourth consecutive year, with a total of 43 million units sold, a 5% decrease from 2023.
The US, UK, and China drove much of the growth in EV sales, with China seeing a rise of 508,000 new battery-electric cars. Battery-electric vehicles now account for 23.2% of global car sales, up from 20.1% last year.
November saw an increase of 67,000 battery electric cars registered, driven largely by a surge in Chinese plug-in hybrid volumes. This growth has led to vehicles with a plug accounting for 26.7% of all cars sold. CEO Ben Nelmes from New AutoMotive stated that the numbers demonstrate a clear trend towards EV adoption and added that ambitious targets will drive consumer adoption, ultimately leading to an unstoppable transition away from ICE vehicles.
