Global Pressure Mounts on Israel Over Gaza Conflict

The international community is finally speaking out against Israel’s war on Gaza, with Western countries and nations from the “Global South” leading the way. Governments have condemned Israel’s actions, with sanctions imposed on several ministers, including a joint statement from the UK, France, and Canada calling it an “intolerable” level of human suffering.

The Hague Group, a bloc of eight nations committed to upholding international law and solidarity with the people of Palestine, has set itself the mission of safeguarding the principles enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations. The group recently hosted a meeting in Bogota, where 12 countries agreed to six measures to limit Israel’s actions in Gaza.

Slovenia has also taken action, barring far-right ministers from entering its territory due to their “incitement to violence” against Palestinians. Other governments, including South Africa and Spain, have launched cases for genocide against Israel at the International Court of Justice.

Public opinion is turning against Israel, with surveys showing a decline in favourability towards the country, particularly among Western Europeans and Americans. Music festivals have also become platforms for denouncing the war on Gaza, as artists and their supporters use their platforms to speak out.

Despite growing international pressure, Netanyahu’s hard-right coalition continues to pursue its war on Gaza despite domestic and international unpopularity. The government’s proposal to confine all of Gaza’s population into a “humanitarian city” has been met with criticism, with many seeing it as a concentration camp.

However, the US remains resolute in its support for Israel, providing diplomatic guarantees and military support through its arsenal. As long as Israel has this support, it feels protected from international pressure. But if it becomes more of an international pariah, economic and diplomatic isolation may become increasingly difficult to handle.
