Global Vulnerabilities Exposed by Conflict and Technology

Conflict in Gaza leaves pregnant women and children severely impacted, with rising rates of acute malnutrition. According to a report, one in five pregnant or breastfeeding women and nearly one in four children treated at Doctors of the World health centers suffered from acute malnutrition.

The dire humanitarian situation in Gaza has resulted in extreme food, medicine, and resource shortages, leading to low birth weight babies linked to maternal malnutrition. In Pakistan, a ban on child marriage was recently enacted after a tense vote. The new law prohibits marriages before 18, with strict punishments for those coercing children into marriage.

The rise of artificial intelligence is also threatening jobs held by women, such as clerical and administrative work. A study found that these jobs are three times more likely to be transformed or replaced by AI compared to male-dominated roles. In high-income countries, 9.6 percent of women’s jobs will be impacted, while only 3.5 percent of men’s jobs will face transformation.

The consequences of conflict and technology on vulnerable populations must not be ignored. The International Labour Organization and Poland’s National Research Institute studied the impact of AI on jobs, highlighting that more tasks are likely to be transformed than replaced. As the world grapples with these challenges, it is essential to prioritize the protection of human rights and address these emerging issues.
