A seismic shift is underway in American eating patterns, with millions flocking to GLP-1 drugs and embracing healthier habits. The trend is influencing prices, as households cut spending on chips, sweets, and cookies while increasing purchases of yogurt, fresh fruit, and protein-rich snacks. Food analysts say the changes are driven by the growing popularity of GLP-1 medications, which have become a staple for weight loss and diabetes treatment.
As supply-side forces push up food prices due to extreme weather events, labor shortages, and gasoline costs related to the war in Iran, Americans are turning to healthier options. Households with at least one GLP-1 user cut grocery spending by over 5% within six months, with significant reductions in calorie-rich processed foods. Yogurt, fresh fruit, and protein bars saw increased purchases.
Food giants are scrambling to adapt to the shift, introducing protein-enriched versions of classic products and cutting prices on popular snacks like Cheetos and Lay’s. Starbucks has also created a line of protein-infused lattes, while Conagra and NestlĂ© offer “GLP-1 Friendly” frozen meals.
Industry experts attribute the trend to a broader cultural shift toward healthier eating, influenced by the Trump administration’s calls for Americans to cut ultra-processed food consumption and emphasize whole-food diets. As the movement gains momentum, Americans across the political spectrum are becoming more conscious of the harms of highly processed foods, driving demand for cleaner snacks.
“We have seen it’s a traffic driver,” said Starbucks Chief Financial Officer Catherine R. Smith about protein products on an earnings call in January. “Anything protein-related is seeing growth rates you haven’t seen in years.”
