GLP-1 Medications Won’t Replace Diet and Exercise

GLP-1 medications have revolutionized the treatment of type 2 diabetes, but researchers warn that they should not be relied on as a sole solution for weight loss and management.

A recent study published in JAMA Internal Medicine suggests that integrating diet and physical activity into treatment plans can lead to better outcomes. Co-authored by Dr. Manson, Dr. Mehrtash from Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, and Dr. Dushay from Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, the research highlights the importance of lifestyle factors in maintaining weight loss when using GLP-1 medications.

As part of Mass General Brigham, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 medications can be effective, they must be used in conjunction with a healthy diet and regular exercise. This approach is crucial for sustaining weight loss and reducing the risk of developing related health problems, such as cardiovascular disease and certain cancers.
