Glycerol in Sugar-Free Slushies Threatens Young Children’s Health

A new study has warned parents to be cautious about sugar-free slushie drinks that contain glycerol, an additive linked to toxic effects in young children. The research reviewed 21 cases of children under four who fell ill after consuming a slushie, with nearly all experiencing drowsiness, low blood sugar, and metabolic imbalances.

Glycerol, used as a sugar replacement, can lead to excessive water retention, digestive issues, and even seizures in high amounts. Young children are particularly vulnerable due to their smaller body size and developing metabolism. The study suggests that parents should watch for signs of drowsiness, slurring of speech, nausea, or sickness after a child consumes a slushie drink.

Dr. Ellen Crushell, one of the study’s authors, recommends that parents monitor their children’s consumption of sugar-free slushies and seek medical attention if they suspect a reaction. The Food Standards Scotland and Food Standards Agency have already recommended limiting these drinks to children four years of age or younger due to concerns over glycerol’s potential health effects.

As sales of frozen drinks, including slushies, top $6 billion in the US this year, parents must be aware of the risks associated with sugar-free versions. The study emphasizes that there are no health benefits for young children from consuming these drinks, regardless of whether they contain sugar or glycerol.
