GM Canada Halts Production at Ontario Plant Due to Low Demand

Canada’s General Motors subsidiary has temporarily halted production and cut staff at an assembly plant in Ingersoll, Ontario, due to lower-than-expected demand for its electric delivery vehicles. The move affects 500 workers, who will face indefinite layoff after the plant reopens on October 1st.

The decision was made by GM Canada to balance inventory and align production schedules with current demand, according to company spokesperson Jennifer Wright. However, Unifor, Canada’s largest private sector union, is criticizing the move as devastating for union members and their families in the Ingersoll community.

GM Canada remains committed to keeping BrightDrop production at the CAMI plant, but the halting of production will impact workers until further notice. The company is supporting employees through this transition, but the long-term effects on the local community are still uncertain.
