Golden Globes Ditches $75,000 Salary for Former Members

The Golden Globes organization has ended its practice of paying former members an annual salary of $75,000 to participate in the voting process. The change comes as part of the five-year contract between the group and new owners Penske Media Eldridge, which was signed in June 2023.

Former HFPA members who were grandfathered into the organization under this contract will receive a severance package worth $102,500. They are also eligible to reapply for accreditation each year.

The decision to stop paying former members is seen as an effort to address concerns about bias in voting. A spokesperson for the Golden Globes stated that continuing to pay members could create perceptions of favoritism.

This change marks a shift towards aligning with other major awards events, such as the Oscars and Emmys, which do not provide compensation for their membership. The Golden Globes has undergone significant changes since its crisis in 2021, including expanding its pool of voters from under 100 to around 300 members.
