Golden Knights Push for Mitch Marner in Sign-and-Trade

The Vegas Golden Knights are in talks with the Toronto Maple Leafs to acquire Mitch Marner’s rights through a sign-and-trade deal. If successful, this move would allow the Golden Knights to secure Marner on an eight-year contract before he hits the open market on Tuesday.

According to league sources, center Nicolas Roy is part of the package being considered by Vegas in exchange for Marner. TSN’s Darren Dreger was the first to report on potential discussions between the two teams.

Marner, 28, is a highly accomplished player sitting fifth on Toronto’s all-time scoring list with 741 points. He became an immediate fan favorite due to his creativity and elite playmaking ability but has faced criticism for the team’s playoff struggles. Marner refused to discuss contract extension talks with the Leafs last season and also declined to waive his no-movement clause.

Golden Knights’ management could benefit from a similar deal made by the Carolina Hurricanes, who traded Jake Guentzel’s rights for a third-round pick after failing to secure him on a contract. The Hurricanes later signed Guentzel to a seven-year deal worth $9 million annually.

Toronto’s general manager, Brad Treliving, acknowledged Marner is test-driving the free-agent market and hinted that he would prefer to get something in return if he leaves.
