Golden State Valkyries Build International-Rich Roster in WNBA Expansion Draft

The Golden State Valkyries have set out to build a competitive team for their inaugural season in the WNBA, and their approach has yielded an impressive mix of international talent. Seven of the 11 players selected by the Valkyries on Friday hail from outside the United States, reflecting coach Natalie Nakase’s emphasis on “competitiveness, high character, and a never satisfied mindset.”

Veteran forward Temi Fagbenle was a key pickup, with her defensive presence and instant rapport with No. 1 pick Caitlin Clark making her an attractive addition. The Valkyries also acquired players like Kate Martin and Kayla Thornton, who bring championship experience to the table.

Nakase stressed the importance of having “championship experience” in building a winning team. The picks were announced in alphabetical order by team name, with the Valkyries selecting players from teams such as the Atlanta Dream, Chicago Sky, and Los Angeles Sparks.

The expansion draft marked the first time the league has held one since 2008, and the Valkyries opted not to make any trades on draft day. With only three players under contract for 2025, the team is now poised to operate in free agency with $1.2 million in cap space.

Golden State’s aggressive approach to building a competitive roster sets them up for success as they begin play next summer.
