Golfers at The Players Championship were racing against time Sunday as thunderstorms halted play just hours after Rory McIlroy surged into a one-shot lead on the back nine.
The PGA Tour stopped play for four hours due to severe weather, with only the 11th hole being completed before the final group was suspended. With sunset projected at 7:34 p.m., it’s unclear if play will resume tomorrow or Monday to finish the tournament.
McIlroy, who already had a win this year, took a strong start to his final round, including a birdie on the 11th hole that put him at 12 under. J.J. Spaun was one shot behind McIlroy with a score of 1 over for the round, while Akshay Bhatia and Tom Hoge trailed by two shots.
Scottie Scheffler, the two-time defending champion, struggled on Sunday, going 15 consecutive holes without a birdie from Saturday’s 13th hole to Sunday’s 11th hole. The last time The Players had to finish on Monday was in 2022, when Cameron Smith won due to weather disruptions.
