Google’s parent company, Alphabet, has dropped its promise to never use artificial intelligence (AI) for military purposes or surveillance tools. The move comes as the technology has evolved and is increasingly being used in everyday life.
The company’s original principles on AI use were updated, removing a section that ruled out uses likely to cause harm. Senior executives James Manyika and Demis Hassabis defended the change, stating that businesses and democratic governments should work together to develop AI for national security.
AI experts are divided on how to govern this powerful technology, with debates on commercial gains and risks for humanity. Google is investing $75 billion in AI projects this year, more than expected, and expanding its AI platform Gemini.
The company’s founders had previously stated “don’t be evil,” but Alphabet has since changed its motto to “Do the right thing.” However, some employees have pushed back against this approach, citing concerns over AI use for lethal purposes.
