Google has reassured its commitment to the smart home market by announcing that more Nest devices are on the way. In a blog post, the company revealed that it will release new gadgets “in the coming months and years,” despite discontinuing two older products: the Nest Protect smoke alarm and carbon monoxide detector, and the Nest x Yale Lock smart lock.
The decision to discontinue these old products is not surprising, given they have not been updated in several years. However, Google’s continued investment in hardware for the home suggests that it remains committed to the Nest brand. The company points to recent launches like the Google TV Streamer and 4th-gen Nest Thermostat as evidence of its interest in smart home devices.
New Nest devices are expected to cover various categories, including security cameras, video doorbells, smart speakers, and smart displays. With Google swapping out Google Assistant for Google Gemini on its devices, it’s likely that updated Nest speakers and displays will follow suit. The company has been several years since releasing a new smart speaker, the Nest Audio, and its most recent smart display, the 2nd-gen Nest Hub.
Google’s decision to move forward with new products may be driven by Amazon’s efforts to upgrade Alexa on its smart home hardware, which could prompt Google to accelerate its own smart home offerings.
