Google Axes Oldest Smart Thermostats in October 2025

Google is phasing out its oldest smart thermostats, including the first and second generation Nest Learning Thermostats. As of October 25, 2025, these devices will no longer receive software updates or connect to Google’s cloud services, making many features unavailable. Despite this, users can still control temperature and schedule changes using the thermostat’s screen.

Google is offering compensation to affected users in the US, with a $130 discount available for those who upgrade to the fourth-gen Nest. In Canada, the discount will be CA$160. However, European users are not eligible for an upgrade. The oldest thermostats were released over 10 years ago and have had regular software updates, but their lifespan is coming to an end.
