Google has unveiled its highly anticipated 3D video conferencing system, Google Beam. The system, previously known as Project Starline, uses advanced hardware and a proprietary model to create a lifelike virtual presence of the speaker. The HP Dimension, a large-screen version of Beam, was revealed at the recent I/O event.
The system relies on six high-speed cameras positioned around the display to capture multiple angles of the speaker. This data is then fed into Google’s volumetric video model, which reconstructs the 3D image. The resulting effect can show minute details in stunning clarity, with a frame rate of 60 frames per second.
While the initial price tag of $24,999 may seem steep, Beam promises to revolutionize remote meetings by enhancing non-verbal cues and improving participant recall. Google also plans to integrate its Meet-based live translation features into Beam later. As impressive as this technology is, it remains to be seen if it will become practical and affordable for widespread use.
