Google Beam Brings Sci-Fi Video Chats to Life

Google has unveiled its AI-powered video communications platform, Google Beam, which aims to revolutionize video calls by making them feel more like in-person meetings. The platform uses a six-camera array and an AI model to capture a 3D person and provide near-perfect head tracking.

The technology is reminiscent of holographic systems seen in sci-fi movies like Star Wars and Star Trek, but with a life-sized and lifelike approach. The platform features a light field display that doesn’t require special equipment, making it accessible to users.

Google says the system can create an immersive experience, addressing issues like reading expressions and gestures during traditional video chats. Beam will be available for early adopters later in 2025 and is expected to gain traction with larger organizations.

Beam is part of Google’s efforts to enhance its video communications platform, which also includes speech translation features that may come to the new platform as well. Google has teamed up with HP to commercialize the technology, which will be showcased at the InfoComm audio visual technology exhibition in June.
