Google Calendar has removed events like Pride month, Black History Month, and Indigenous People Month from its default list, citing sustainability concerns. The change came after a decade of partnering with Timeanddate.com to display public holidays and national observances. However, the company decided to return to using only public holidays globally due to maintenance costs.
The move has sparked outrage among users, who claim that the platform is now “shameful” and being used to “capitulate to fascism.” Google has explained its decision, stating that it’s no longer sustainable to manually add hundreds of cultural moments worldwide. Users are now left to manually add important events on their calendars.
Google partnered with Timeanddate.com in 2013 to display public holidays and national observances. However, as the number of countries and events increased, the company found it unsustainable to maintain. The new system shows only public holidays from Timeanddate.com globally, allowing users to manually add other important moments.
