Google has reportedly canceled its second-generation Pixel Tablet, leaving only last year’s model as a one-off device. The decision suggests that sales of the tablet have been poor enough to warrant further investment just isn’t worth it.
The cancellation comes as rumors of new features and a keyboard accessory for the abandoned product emerged just last week. Google’s struggle to break into the tablet market is attributed to its on-again, off-again strategy, poor hardware, and limited app optimization compared to Apple’s iPad.
In 2019, Google discontinued tablet production after the Pixel Slate received negative reviews. However, in 2022, it announced a new tablet project, which became the $499 Pixel Tablet. Despite this, Google seems to have learned its lesson, opting not to invest in another follow-up device.
The future of Google’s large-screen product ambitions remains uncertain, with some speculating that its Nest division may take over and focus on evolving devices like the Nest Hub and Hub Max instead of standalone tablets. A spokesperson for Google has yet to comment on this development.
