Google has updated its policies for Chrome extensions to combat abuse after a popular browser extension, Honey, was accused of being a “scam.” The new rules aim to prevent similar practices by requiring affiliate links only when they provide a direct and transparent user benefit.
According to the updated policy, affiliate links must be included when an extension offers a tangible benefit to users. This means that extensions cannot inject affiliate links in the background without related user action. Some common violations include inserting affiliate links with no discount or cashback offer, and continuously injecting affiliate links without any user interaction.
The move comes after YouTubers MegaLag and Legal Eagle highlighted Honey’s alleged affiliate practices, leading to increased scrutiny from Google. The company has yet to comment on the new policy changes.
