Google has announced that it’s discontinuing its popular Nest Protect smart smoke and CO alarm and the Nest x Yale smart door lock. The decision comes as part of the company’s effort to build a platform that all device makers and developers can use to spur innovation in the home.
The Nest Protect, which was launched in 2013, will be replaced by a new First Alert Smart Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Alarm developed in partnership with Yale. The new alarm will cost $129 and can interconnect with existing Nest Protect devices via Google’s Weave/Thread communication protocol. However, it will connect to the Google Home app over Wi-Fi to send alerts and notifications.
The Nest x Yale door lock, launched in 2018, will also be phased out. Existing locks will continue to receive security updates, and new features such as passcode management will be added from the Nest app to the Google Home app. Google is partnering with Yale again to develop a new smart lock called the Yale Smart Lock with Matter, which will work seamlessly with any Matter-compatible ecosystem.
The decision reflects Google’s commitment to refining its portfolio of devices to meet customer needs as the smart home evolves. Users can still purchase remaining Nest Protects while supplies last and can expect ongoing security updates for the discontinued products until their expiration dates.
