Google is adding new security warnings when downloading suspicious or malicious files through its Chrome web browser. The company is introducing a two-tier warning system based on Google Safe Browsing verdicts: Suspicious files and Dangerous files, each with its own iconography, color, and text to help users make informed choices.
For users who have enabled Enhanced Protection mode in Chrome, the search giant will automatically perform deep scans of downloaded files without requiring user input. In cases where files are embedded within password-protected archives, users can enter the file’s password to send it for a deep scan before opening.
Google emphasized that uploaded files and passwords are deleted shortly after scanning, and collected data is used only for improving download protections. In Standard Protection mode, downloading suspicious encrypted archives will prompt users to enter the file’s password, but the file and password remain on the local device, and only metadata is checked with Safe Browsing.
