Google Enhances Play Protect Service to Automatically Turn Off Harmful Android Apps’ Permissions

Google has upgraded its Play Protect service with an advanced feature that will automatically revoke permissions from potentially harmful Android apps. This update is designed to safeguard users by preventing malicious apps from accessing sensitive data like storage, photos, and camera functions. While users can still manually restore these permissions, Google will require them to confirm the decision for added security.

The enhanced Play Protect now scans all apps on a device, including those downloaded outside the official Play Store, ensuring any risky activity is identified promptly. If an app is flagged as harmful, Google may remove it from the Play Store or notify users if they have it installed. Additionally, Play Protect can reset permissions for unused apps and automatically block or disable harmful ones based on their severity.

To prevent misuse during calls or video chats, Google has updated Play Protect to stop allowing users from turning off the service while actively using their phones, including through popular third-party apps. This feature aims to combat scammers who attempt to install malicious apps by convincing users to disable Play Protect.

Other notable updates include live threat detection for Pixel devices and a new verification badge for VPNs, ensuring transparency about their security standards.
