Google has revised its plan for the deprecated goo.gl URL shortening service after receiving feedback. Initially, the company announced it would end support entirely, but 99% of shortened URLs receive no traffic at all. The decision to continue supporting a limited group of links was made.
As of July 18 this year, Google initially planned to stop supporting shortened URLs by August 25, 2025. However, after listening to feedback from users, the company adjusted its approach to preserve actively used links. This change will prioritize supporting goo.gl URLs that still receive traffic while discontinuing support for those with no traffic.
Users who have goog.gl redirected links can check if they display a warning message by visiting the link. If a warning is displayed, it’s recommended to move to another URL shortener. Otherwise, the link will continue to function normally. The revised plan ensures that actively used goo.gl URLs remain available for future use.
