Google has been indexing conversations between users and ChatGPT that were intended to be private exchanges with small groups of friends, family, or colleagues. When a user clicks the “Share” button on ChatGPT, the conversation URL can be used in Google site search, revealing personal details and struggles shared during the chat.
This can include sensitive information such as addiction issues, physical abuse experiences, mental health concerns, or fears about AI models spying on them. Some users may inadvertently reveal their identities by sharing specific details, even if they don’t intend for it to be publicly accessible.
A recent analysis found nearly 4,500 conversations were indexed by Google through this method, but many don’t contain personal details. The full count is likely higher, as not all conversations are indexed by the search engine. Fast Company has chosen not to share or describe these conversations due to their sensitive nature.
The opt-in feature for sharing ChatGPT conversations with others has since been removed by OpenAI. Individuals can apply now for Fast Company’s Most Innovative Companies Awards before the deadline on September 5 at 11:59 p.m. PT.
