Google Introduces AI-Driven Email Summaries in Gmail

Google’s Gemini AI assistant is now being used to summarize emails, allowing users to view key points without having to manually select the option. This new feature will automatically provide summaries when needed, although it may not always be accurate.

The update follows similar efforts from other tech companies, including Apple, which introduced AI-driven summaries for app push notifications but paused the feature due to mistakes in summarizing news headlines. Google’s own Search feature has also faced issues with providing poor quality and inaccurate information at times.

The new email summary cards will list key points from longer emails and continue to update as replies arrive. However, users can still manually summarize an email using a chip at the top of the email or in the Gemini side panel.

Initially available only for English-language emails, the feature may be turned on or off by default depending on the user’s region. Users can also enable or disable it from Gmail’s Settings under “Smart features,” while workplace admins have control over disabling personalization settings through the Admin console.
