Google is introducing a new feature called “Battery health assistance” on its Pixel devices, starting with the Pixel 9a. This software feature aims to extend the usability of the devices by managing battery performance and maintaining healthy battery aging.
The feature will adjust the phone’s charging speed based on adjusted capacity, resulting in small decreases in runtime as the battery ages. This is similar to a feature Google released last year for the Pixel 4a due to an overheating risk.
Unlike Apple’s “performance management” feature, which affects all iPhones due to chemical aging of batteries, Google’s Battery health assistance is designed to be voluntary for users of previously launched devices. Users will not have customizable settings on older Pixel models.
The new feature joins other charging optimizations like the “Limit to 80%” option and viewing cycle count. With this update, Pixel phones are expected to retain up to 80% capacity after 1000 charge cycles, according to Google’s earlier statement.
