Google Messages Auto-Delete OTP Feature Frustrates User

I still use Google Messages as my primary text messaging app on my Android phone, and I’ve never regretted it until recently. However, a feature that once impressed me has now become a point of frustration – the auto-delete OTP in Google Messages.

This feature was initially a genius capability that I praised when it was introduced in 2021. It automatically deletes messages with OTPs and security codes from businesses after 24 hours. But after experiencing an embarrassing situation where the auto-delete functionality deleted my OTP, I’ve disabled the feature to avoid similar incidents.

The problem is that I couldn’t find this setting easily, and the auto-delete functionality put me in a difficult spot when I needed it. Google can fix this by allowing users to add exceptions or choose when those OTPs are deleted. However, given the decline of standard SMS usage and the lack of interest from users, I doubt Google will prioritize this feature.

Despite this flaw, I still recommend Google Messages to my friends and family. The app remains the best way to text on Android, offering many features that enhance user experience. While the auto-delete OTP feature has muted my enthusiasm, my overall satisfaction with the app has not changed.
