Google Phone App Tests New Call Answering Options

Google’s Phone by Google app is now closer to a redesign of the incoming call screen, allowing users to choose between two options: a single tap or a horizontal swipe gesture. To understand what these changes might look like, we’ve decompiled the latest version of the app (version 177) and found strings related to “Incoming call gesture” settings.

The current option is a vertical “Swipe up to answer” gesture, while a testing phase introduced buttons with similar design to Wear OS. A more experimental approach was also spotted in September, featuring a single tap button. The upcoming version will allow users to select their preferred option through the app’s settings.

This customization feature is part of a broader Material 3 Expressive redesign that may also include changes to Phone Settings.
